After the brutal earthquake struck the Sichuan region, about 5,500 children had been deprived of their parents. As they huddle in the refugee camps, many couples around the nation are seeking to adopt the orphans for proper care and love. In addition to the welcoming attitudes of the couples, the Chinese government will be suspending its strict enforcement of one child per family law. Furthermore, it is reported that families whose only child had been severely injured by the earthquake shall be permitted to give birth to another child.
Although numerous couples are benevolently seeking to adopt the orphans, some scholars are raising concerns about the sudden change in the children’s lives. It is the psychologists’ opinions that the children should be kept with family members such as grandparents for the best of the children’s mental health.
Nonetheless, the efforts of Chinese to recover from the crisis is eminent; a welcoming news.

At least that’s something the Chinese government is trying to do right.

I think that’s kind of weird though. It’s like, “Oh, your first kid died. I guess we’ll lift the law temporarily so you can have another one to replace it…” But I guess they’re just trying to help.

Shouldn’t the Chinese government give the kids to their closest adult relative, and then allow the relative to choose whether or not to give the child up for adoption?

Maybe they are doing that. Specifics aren’t known, but they should definitely take that into account.

I feel sorry for all the orphaned children. It will probably take years for China to fully recover. I just hope the children get placed in good families.

I feel that the chinese government is not doing much to aid these children in their difficulties coping with their lives after this terrible disaster. Even though the government has allowed the affected families to have more than one child due to the possibility of a dead or injured child, think about the age of the parents. The affected schools were mostly middle schools, meaning that the children were in their early teens. The adults will be too old to give another birth, or giving birth will be too much of a trouble for them. The government should be doing more to aid these desperate families and we should join in to do the same. If we as people of the same international community show the chinese government that we are taking a stand to help these children, then they might do the same as well.

It is really magnanimous of all those couples who are willing to adopt these children. These children represent China’s future, and safeguarding them should definitely be among the government’s primary objectives.

I may seem anti-humanist or whatever but I think the one-child policy should still be in effect. Those exempt to the policy should be those who were victims of the earthquake. However, if you truly think about it, if the parents really loved their child (assuming the child is still alive), they wouldn’t have a need to have another just to replace an injured kid. And anyways, the other citizens of China will take this opportunity to produce more babies, unless if I’m reading this the wrong way, which will increase the population of people on earth. Oh yeah, I agree with what Bryan said about the parents’ age.
Luke’s question is good but I think the reason why the children are up for adoption is because nobody knows whose children they belong to. Otherwise all their close relatives died in the earthquake. Also, not all close relatives are readily to adopt a child. If a close relative knew who the children are related to and are willing to take them in, then they would take the chance of the adoption service and already adopt the child already.
The thing about psychological effects on the children raises some speculation. Getting adopted into a family is better on the orphans (psychologically) than allowing them to roam around randomly or putting them in an orphan house. When a family wants to adopt an orphan, the orphan will have a new family to love and have a new family to care for him/her. Furthermore, some orphans are too young to truly understand the situation. By the time when they’re old enough to know what’s going on, they would’ve forgotten what had happened.
